Medical Conditions for Medical Marijuana Card

Medical Conditions

Medical marijuana is legal in California when used for a valid medical condition. Your medical condition must be assessed and verified by your doctor to qualify for a physician’s recommendation. Below is a list of qualifying medical conditions for the state of California under Proposition 215, also known as the Compassionate Care Act of 1996.


In order to qualify for a medical marijuana card, a patient needs to have a doctor’s recommendation that determines the patient is suffering from one or more of the following conditions:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
  • Anorexia
  • Arthritis
  • Cachexia (Wasting Syndrome)
  • Cancer
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Glaucoma
  • Hepatitis C
  • Lyme disease
  • Migraine
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
  • Muscle Spasms
  • Severe and chronic pain
  • Severe nausea
  • Seizures
  • Spasticity
  • Others...

The Marijuana Medical Program (MMP) of California allows for other qualifying conditions. According to the MMP “any other chronic or persistent medical condition that limits the ability of the patient to conduct one or more major life activities as defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, or if not alleviated, may cause serious harm to the patient’s safety, physical, or mental health.”
